Actualities: Pagan dialogues

The new book of Sorin Nemeti, one of the leading scholars of Roman religious studies in Romania entitled “Dialoguri păgâne – formule votive şi limbaj figurat în Dacia romană”  (Iaşi, 2]12, 270 p.) appeared  “Editura Universităţii “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” from Iaşi in the new series of  “Antiqua et Mediaevalia – Judaica et Orientalia” edited by Iulian Moga from the same alumni.  The book will appear also in English, entitled “Pagan Dialogues.  Religious Message and Social Representation in the votive inscriptions from Dacia” (EDR, Rome, forthcoming). Many of the chapters were published as separate articles or studies of the author, but it is the first time when they are published in an updated,  conceptually new method and as a collective volume.  The book contains two chapters with many subchapters:  a short, but very interesting and unusual preface by Mihai Bărbulescu  the introduction of the author, a historiographic summary of the Roman religious studies in Romania. After the introductory part, the author presents the key elements of his theory about Roman religion, using not only the model of Paul Veyne about the second paganism, but especially the ancient conceptions and terms of religious manifestations known from Proclus or other authors: name of the Gods and imagine of the Gods.

“Cartea Dialoguri păgâne. Formule votive şi limbaj figurat în Dacia este analiza unui dialog purtat în politeismul lumii greco-romane între reprezentanţii lumii divine şi cei ai lumii umane, comunicarea divin-uman în provincia Dacia, mijloacele, posibilităţile şi rezultatele acesteia. Diversele capitole sunt reflecţii centrate de aceste două probleme fundamentale care definesc politeismul antic, anume practica votivă (nucleul religiozităţii antice) şi accesul spre datele mitologice şi rituale prin intermediul limbajului figurat (decisiv într-o societate cu alfabetizare restrânsă). Corpus-ul principal de surse este constituit de materialul votiv şi cultual epigrafic şi figurat votiv din provincia romană Dacia şi concluziile pe care le vom formula se aplică, mai ales, problemelor religiozităţii provinciale” (op.cit.)
